Inspiring Future Careers at Hartford Church of England High School
Torsion was pleased to support Hartford Church of England High School’s recent STEM Awards celebration, where our Managing Director, Ed Wootton, was invited to speak to students, staff, and families about careers in construction and the role STEM subjects play in shaping the future of our industry.
The evening was a fantastic opportunity to recognise the achievements of young people and to highlight how science, technology, engineering, and maths directly translate into real-world careers; many of which are central to our sector.
Opening Eyes to the Possibilities
Speaking on behalf of Torsion, Ed Wootton shared insights into the breadth of opportunity within the construction industry.
“What stood out was the students’ curiosity and how quickly they connected classroom learning with real-world roles. Construction is more than hard hats and high-vis; it’s about problem-solving, leadership, digital design, sustainability, and innovation. There’s space for every skillset.”
The evening included a look at the scale of construction’s impact on the UK economy and employment; offering a live example of maths in action. The room was surprised to learn that, based on national trends, over 100 of the school’s pupils could go on to work in construction in the years ahead.
No One Route, Many Opportunities
Ed also reflected on his own career path; from growing up in a family business, through college and university, to holding senior leadership roles within the sector. His message to students was clear:
“There’s no single route into construction. Whether you start on-site, in the classroom, or through an apprenticeship or degree, there are always opportunities to progress and succeed.”
