Shona’s Journey as an Apprentice Electrician

At Torsion Group, we are committed to fostering talent and providing opportunities for the next generation of skilled professionals. FPS (Future Power Systems) are a valued member of our supply chain, currently working on two more of our schemes. Our long-term commitment to our supply chain enables them to provide stable employment and apprenticeship opportunities, helping to shape the future workforce.
Following on from International Women’s Day, we’re shining a spotlight on Shona Milne, an Apprentice Electrician at FPS (Future Power Systems), who is embracing the challenges and rewards of hands-on learning in the field on our Fawcett Street student accommodation development in York.
From Retail to Electrical Apprenticeship
Shona’s journey into electrical work started with a simple ambition: to be in a role that was more active, hands-on, and engaging. Encouraged by a friend, she applied for an apprenticeship, and in just six months, she has gained real-world experience on-site while attending Leeds City College on block release.
“When I first started, I wasn’t sure if I’d be capable, but you learn so quickly. The team has been really supportive, and now, what felt difficult at first has become second nature. Every day is different, and that’s what I love about it.”
Learning & Growth on Site
From developing a basic understanding of how sites operate to problem solving and installations, Shona is fully immersed in the apprenticeship experience. She’s also got her sights set on the future:
“One day, I’d love to work on a large, prestigious project. It’s incredible to see how things come together on-site, from an empty space to a finished building; I want to be part of something on a big scale.”

Her line manager, Andy Austin, recognises her progress and determination:
“Shona has a fantastic work ethic. She’s eager to learn, takes on every challenge, and is becoming a valued part of the team. It’s great to see apprentices develop, and she has a strong future ahead of her.”
Why Apprenticeships Matter
Apprenticeships offer the chance to learn while earning, develop practical skills, and build a long-term career in construction. They are essential in shaping the workforce of the future, bringing fresh talent into the industry.
Following on from International Women’s Day, we’re proud to celebrate apprentices like Shona, who are taking bold steps in their careers and shaping the future of construction.
