National Apprenticeship Week 2025
Why Apprenticeships Are the Future of Construction
The construction industry is evolving rapidly, and with it comes a growing demand for fresh talent equipped with practical skills and innovative perspectives. At Torsion, we’ve long recognised that apprenticeships aren’t just a pathway into the industry—they are the cornerstone of its future.
A Year On: The Success of Torsion’s Apprenticeship Carousel
In 2024, Torsion launched its Apprenticeship Carousel Programme, offering young professionals the chance to rotate through six key disciplines—pre-construction, planning, design, health & safety, commercial, and on-site operations. One year later, our apprentices have grown in confidence, gained real-world experience, and begun specialising in their chosen fields.

Paula Smith, HR Director, on Investing in the Next Generation of Talent:
“It’s the passion and commitment from everybody involved that is making the programme a success. Everybody is playing their part, from the leaders of the business, the senior management team, the mentors in each discipline and the trainees themselves.
I feel really proud of Torsion and everything we are doing to support and develop the next generation of talent in this industry.”
Bridging the Skills Gap
As the built environment becomes more complex and technology-driven, the skills required to deliver innovative and sustainable projects are expanding.
Apprenticeships provide a hands-on approach to learning, ensuring young professionals are industry-ready from day one. This dual approach; combining practical experience with structured learning; doesn’t just fill the skills gap but nurtures well-rounded professionals with a deeper understanding of real-world challenges.

Alex Barker, Operations Director, reflects on the first year of the programme:
“Last year, we launched the Apprenticeship Carousel to give apprentices hands-on experience across the entire construction process before choosing their career path.. Seeing the journey of our apprentices over the past 12 months has been incredible. They’ve developed technical skills, learned how to solve real industry challenges, and gained the confidence to take ownership of key responsibilities. This programme isn’t just about learning the job—it’s about preparing the next generation of leaders in construction.”
John Currie, Managing Director, proud of the development over the last year:
“Our apprentices are a vital part of Torsion’s future, and it’s been incredible to see their growth over the past year. Their dedication, willingness to learn, and hands-on experience across key disciplines are shaping them into the next generation of industry professionals. We’re proud to support their journey and look forward to seeing their continued success.”

Why Apprenticeships Matter
- Practical Learning: Unlike traditional education, apprenticeships immerse individuals in the workplace, allowing them to apply their knowledge in real-time and learn from experienced professionals.
- Specialisation Opportunities: By exposing apprentices to multiple disciplines, such as design, planning, and commercial operations, they develop a holistic understanding before choosing their preferred career path.
- Career Growth: Apprenticeships lay the foundation for long-term success, equipping individuals with the skills, confidence, and networks to thrive in construction.
Meet the Apprentices: One Year of Progress
At Torsion, we are proud to see our apprentices gaining hands-on experience and growing into confident professionals across key areas like Health & Safety and Operations. Over the past year, they have developed essential skills, taken on real responsibilities, and contributed to major projects, demonstrating their potential as the future leaders of our industry.

A Vision for the Future
For the construction industry to thrive, it must continue to invest in apprenticeships. These programmes are essential for fostering creativity, adaptability, and leadership skills, ensuring that the next generation of construction professionals is prepared to tackle tomorrow’s challenges.
Torsion’s apprenticeship journey isn’t just about learning how to build projects; it’s about building careers that last a lifetime.
